Trichomoniasis is one of the most common curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs), especially in young, sexually active women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 7.4 million new cases occur in men and women every year in the United States.

Trichomoniasis is spread through penis-to-vagina sex or intimate sexual contact with an infected partner. The genital infection caused by trichomoniasis may also increase the risk of getting and spreading HIV infection. Trichomonads could not be visualized, however. Trich tests are not normally provided to expectant mothers but trichomoniasis can affect the  baby. In particular, this infection is associated with pre-term and premature birth as well as low-birth weight in newborns (under 5 pounds).

Infected mothers can pass trichomoniasis to their babies during delivery (vertical transmission). Because the trichomoniasis parasite can survive outside the human body for up to almost one hour, transmission is also possible through contact of the genital area with wet or damp clothes.  

Infection with other STDs and having multiple sex partners are primary factors that put women at higher risk. In some cases, trichomoniasis may be transmitted by a pregnant woman to her baby during childbirth. Infection produces immunity that at best is only partially protective. Evidence of lymphocyte priming is shown by the presence of antigen-specific peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Infection may be asymptomatic in either sex, but asymptomatic is the rule for men. In men, protozoa may persist for long periods in the GU tract without causing symptoms; thus, protozoa may be transmitted unwittingly to sex partners.

Trichomonas can also cause small, dark red spots (petechiae) on the cervix. The vaginal secretions are likely to be more alkaline than normal, and the clinician may use a strip of pH paper to check acidity. Trichomonads are recognized by their jerky movements. Trichomoniasis affects both women and men. The most common location of infection in women is the vagina, and in men it is the urethra.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV), which is not a "classic" STI, is caused by an imbalance in the bacteria normally found in the vagina, and only affects women. Although these diseases haven't been studied to the extent of some other STIs, they are among the most common conditions found in women.

The third stage is called the latent syphilis. In this stage, the bacteria are at its latency. This means that the bacteria remain inactive. However, sores and lesions may still occur.

And the last stage is the tertiary stage. At this stage, the person may no longer be contagious, but the bacteria reactivate, multiply, and spread throughout the body, damaging the heart, eyes, brain, nervous system, bones, and joints. Tumors may develop on skin, bone, testes, and other tissues; cardiovascular symptoms such as aortic aneurysm and aortic valve insufficiency may develop; degenerative central nervous system disease, loss of muscle coordination, paralysis, and blindness. Damage is irreversible.

Syphilis is a highly curable disease. It is so important that the disease is detected early to prevent further health damage to the patient. A single intramuscular injection of penicillin is the standard treatment for primary, secondary, and early latent syphilis. Others say an ointment containing propolis may help genital herpes sores heal. These treatments have not been approved for treating genital herpes by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Physical examination along with laboratory testing will be done. Physical exam is needed to check if there are physical signs and symptoms on the patient’s body. Blood or urine samples will be taken for laboratory testing. STD test does not only determine if the patient is positively infected or not. It can also check what type of STD has infected the patient.
